Flexibility Enables Surprise Viking Exploration, Again

On the way to North America, Viking Star is currently sailing an interesting itinerary titled In The Wake Of Vikings.  It’s a 15 day sailing that visits 6 countries and includes 10 guided tours. When that journey ends in Montreal, it’s on to a one time Eastern Seaboard Explorer itinerary, ending in New York City. After a 4 days at sea, Viking Star arrives in San Juan. That’s where our Countdown To The Caribbean ends and we begin sailing a West Indies Explorer cruise that promises a new option for Caribbean cruise travelers.   At least that was the plan.  There has been a change that brings some surprise Viking exploration.  You’re going to like it.

A last-minute cancellation on Viking Star’s In The Wake Of Vikings sailing allowed me to jump on the 930-passenger ship when she arrives in Reykjavik, Iceland.  Visiting a part of the world we have never been to, I’ll have first-hand reports along the way at a number of interesting destinations.

We join Viking Star on day 6 of the 15-day itinerary on a not-all-that-long flight from Orlando to Reykjavik via New York.  It will be the first time we have joined a sailing of any ship in progress which offers the opportunity to see what it is like to do just that, something a number of cruise lines commonly offer in the Mediterranean.

Also interesting, except for a stop in Quebec City on a Fall Foliage sailing with a different cruise line in 2014, we have not sailed in the waters this itinerary explores nor stopped at any of the ports along the way.

Good news: on board right now is our Canadian friend Aaron Saunders (@DeckChairBlog) who is also visiting some of these interesting places for the first time.  Follow along in real time via satellite and the help of Marine Traffic to see where Aaron and Viking Star are right now.

Same Wonderful Song, Different Amazing Singer

If this modification to our travel plans sounds familiar, it should.  Not all that long ago we enjoyed a river cruise itinerary in Eastern Germany, modified due to low water levels.  Also a point in favor of being flexible when it comes to travel, that trip turned out to be one our best ever.

Here is the full In The Wake Of Vikings itinerary I will sail, also available for 2017.  I start on day six.

Stay tuned as we continue to Countdown To The Caribbean, highlighting features of the Viking ocean experience that have been well received elsewhere and look to be a good fit for the Caribbean as well.
