Carnival Partners With Sneaker Impact For Sustainability

  • Industry-First Alliance: Carnival Cruise Line becomes the very first cruise line to join forces with Miami-based Sneaker Impact for a fleetwide shoe recycling program.
  • Dual-Path Repurposing: Donated and unclaimed footwear is either resold by small business owners in developing regions or broken down into materials for yoga mats and athletic turf.
  • Massive Waste Diversion: Following an initial test diverting over 500 pairs across five ships in one month, the full rollout aims to keep around 50,000 pairs of shoes out of landfills each year.
  • Broader Sustainability Strategy: The initiative builds momentum for the global environmental commitments outlined across all Carnival Corporation cruise lines

Carnival Cruise Line has made history as the first cruise operator to partner with Sneaker Impact, launching a groundbreaking shoe recycling and reuse initiative across its United States fleet. This creative collaboration provides a purposeful second life for footwear left behind on ships, as well as voluntary donations from guests and crew members, directly advancing circular economy practices at sea.

Collected footwear is transported to the Miami facility of Sneaker Impact, where a specialized sorting process assesses each pair. Shoes that remain in good condition are distributed to micro-entrepreneurs and small business owners in developing nations. This effort supports local commerce, generates vital income, and provides affordable footwear to communities facing limited access. For worn-out shoes past their wearable life, materials are separated and reclaimed to manufacture functional items like athletic tracks, yoga mats, and new footwear components.

Initial results underscore the high potential of this green program. In a single trial month, just five participating Carnival ships collected and diverted over 500 pairs of shoes away from municipal landfills. Once fully deployed across the entire fleet, the cruise line projects diverting approximately 50,000 pairs of footwear annually. This milestone reflects the broader corporate commitment across Carnival Corporation brands to reduce environmental waste and champion sustainable maritime travel.
