Wait. A Wave Pool Bigger Than 11 Football Fields?

A Florida company is proposing to build a surf park at a soon-to-close landfill in the Orlando area. The 44-acre surf park would include a pool larger than eleven football fields and capable of creating waves as high as 10 feet. Also to be featured, a restaurant, shops, a beach volleyball court, a playground, a pavilion, a surf shop, and an academic center for educational programs..

One goal of the surf park is to help establish surfing as an NCAA-sanctioned sport. Surfing debuted as an Olympic sport during the 2020 Tokyo Games and has been approved for the Paris Summer Olympic Games in 2024. So, surfable size waves.

The proposed wave pool would have a 35-million-gallon water capacity and be surrounded by a beach, support retail, stormwater pond, and parking. Using patented technology, the Ocean Sports Development surf park can create a variety of waves similar to what can be found at the beach.

The park would be open to the public, at a rate of $100 per 90 minutes or $33 per half hour. Surfboards would be available for rent or purchase.

The project is currently in the early stages of planning and approval. If approved, construction could begin in early 2024 and the surf park could open to the public in late 2025. We see it as something fun to do on the day before your cruise because it seems to be impossible to spend too much time in Florida. Come on down!
