United Airlines App Automates Multiple Standby Options

  • Multi-Flight Standby Access: Passengers rebooked on later flights can now list for standby on up to three earlier departures to their destination via the United app.
  • Confirmed Seat Protection: Travelers retain their confirmed backup seat on the later flight with zero risk until they actively accept an earlier seat offer.
  • Automated Seat Monitoring: United tracks availability behind the scenes and delivers instant text notifications whenever a seat opens up.
  • Line-Free Self-Service: The feature eliminates the need to visit airport service counters or call agents, empowering travelers to manage schedule changes on the go.

United Airlines is introducing an industry-first self-service enhancement to its mobile app that provides travelers with greater autonomy, reassurance, and flexibility when flights are disrupted. Rolling out ahead of the busy Labor Day travel period—during which more than 3.4 million flyers are expected across the network—this innovative upgrade allows customers who have been rebooked onto a later flight to join the standby list for up to three earlier flights directly from their smartphones.

The primary advantage of this digital advancement is that travelers never have to forfeit their confirmed seat on the later itinerary while waiting for an earlier opening. Instead of standing in long lines at customer service counters or continuously refreshing flight status screens, passengers can simply select up to three earlier departures to the same destination. United’s backend systems then monitor seat inventory in real time and automatically send a text notification if a seat becomes available on any of the selected alternatives. The customer can then review the option and choose whether to confirm the earlier flight, with their original backup reservation remaining fully intact until they make a decision.

This tool expands United’s portfolio of self-service recovery features, complementing existing capabilities such as automated meal and hotel voucher distribution, TSA security line tracking, and interactive gate connection assistance. By putting powerful, intuitive rebooking options directly into the hands of travelers, United is making irregular airline operations significantly smoother, less stressful, and far more passenger-friendly.
