Beyond Cruising: Meet Moab Adventure Center

Moab Adventure Center in the red rock playground of Moab, Utah, is poised to be an incredibly helpful resource in 2023 for those in charge of organizing and orchestrating group outings.

“Battening down the hatches was the norm during the pandemic. With those dark days of isolation behind us, we’re seeing an upsurge of interest from youth groups, corporate retreat planners and families planning reunions,” says Sierra Schmutz, General Manager of the Moab Adventure Center.

Corporate interest seems stronger than ever with so many employees working remotely from home. With reduced cost benefits from remote work, many businesses are now devoting a higher percentage of their budget to corporate retreats and team building.

“The challenge is to build relationships and bonds between team members who rarely get together at work anymore. Managers and activities directors see the vital need for team building and bonding. Helping them plan the perfect outing is what we do best,” said Schmutz.

Schmutz suggests that groups cement their plans as soon as possible in order to secure preferred dates for such popular programs as the full-day (5.5 hours start to finish) Moab Colorado River rafting adventure

When groups want to experience as many of Moab’s resources as they can in a short period of time, half-day rafting programs can be organized along with rappelling and canyoneeringrock climbing or zip lines.

“Corporate meeting planners have also been challenged to help employees to develop healthy working relationships and deeper personal connections. Another goal is to help them become reacquainted with teammates after working remotely for some time. For such intense assignments, Moab Adventure Center offers an immersive and equally intense overnight experience on our 2-day Cataract Express,” Schmutz adds.

To cover a 96-mile distance on the river in two days, Moab Adventure Center employs high-speed boats called Snout Rigs, dubbed the “Corvette of the Colorado,” that tackle with ease the nearly 30 whitewater rapids that make Cataract Canyon legendary.

“Nail biting and bonding occur simultaneously. Nobody can remain strangers after sharing the excitement of being on this river,” she underscores.

The many benefits of a group charter also include:

  • A shared experience that is fun, a bit scary
  • The feeling of team accomplishment and success after facing the obstacles/challenges of a river and conquering them
  • Building friendships and closer relationships within a group
  • Leveling the playing field as everyone from the boss to the newest employee/member is equal, on the same level, and is asked to perform the same duties (like paddling)
  • Learning about the region’s natural and human history from knowledgeable guides
  • Thriving on great exercise, fresh air and abundant sunshine
  • Creating fun stories for reminiscing and sharing back home, at the office water cooler and at future group get-togethers

Families appreciate the help Moab Adventure Center offers when it comes to organizing a family vacation or reunion in the greater Moab region. The family reunions that stay right in Moab can arrange an activities schedule that grandma and grandpa can dip in and out of at will and that can accommodate a toddler’s nap time.

But if a family is feeling more adventurous, they may opt for a longer, more extended, and inclusive activity such as a 5-day Desolation Canyon Raft Adventure in Utah.

Setting the stage for guests to tackle new experiences and move outside of their comfort zones creates what Schmutz calls “Moab Magic.” Guests can experience this magic in a myriad of ways through the Moab Adventure Center while on the rush of a river current or when rappelling, surrounded by people who care about them and who are cheering them on.

Most activities available through Moab Adventure Center can accommodate private, exclusive groups of 15 to 25 (or more) participants. Minimum age requirements vary, but many activities can accommodate youth as young as 5. Rates are adjusted for group size. The group organizer often enjoys the outings for free.
