Holland America Tests Renewable Fuels

Holland America Line (HAL) is taking a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the cruise industry by initiating a long-term biofuel test on its flagship, Rotterdam. This test marks several firsts.

  • 100% Low Carbon Intensity Biofuel: The Rotterdam is operating one of its four engines on biofuel derived entirely from organic waste or residues. This sustainable fuel, supplied by GoodFuels, is certified according to the EU Renewable Energy Directive and is expected to achieve an 86% reduction in life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional marine gas oil (MGO).
  • Focus on Norwegian Fjords: The initial tests are happening during cruises in the Norwegian World Heritage Fjords, specifically Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord. There’s potential to expand biofuel usage to more engines throughout the summer season.
  • Industry Leader in Biofuel Testing: HAL is a frontrunner in biofuel adoption within Carnival Corporation. This initiative follows a successful initial test conducted in August 2022 and builds upon similar efforts by their German brand, AIDA Cruises.

Benefits of Biofuels:

  • Biofuels are derived from sustainable sources like waste fats, oils, and grease, minimizing production emissions and competition with food production.
  • Their low carbon intensity significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fuels.
  • Existing ship engines require no modifications to run on biofuels.

Industry & Government Support:

  • This project is supported by the Dutch government and well-received by the Norwegian Maritime Authority, highlighting the industry’s commitment to emission reduction strategies.

Future Outlook:

These tests contribute to Carnival Corporation’s broader sustainability goals, outlined in their 2023 Sustainability Report. The company aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and is making significant progress towards its 2030 environmental targets.

This initiative by HAL demonstrates the potential of biofuels in reducing the environmental impact of the cruise industry. Continued testing and development could pave the way for wider adoption of this sustainable fuel source.
