The Imperial Hotel, Kyoto has reached a significant historic preservation milestone for the former Yasaka Kaikan, a beloved 1936 architectural landmark located in the famous Gion district. Japan’s Council for Cultural Affairs officially retained the structure’s status as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property under the new designation Former Yasaka Kaikan. This recognition celebrates the successful adaptive reuse project that transformed portions of the historic venue into a refined boutique hotel while rescuing the aging, seismically vulnerable building from potential demolition.

Debuting in March 2026, the 55-room luxury hotel harmoniously blends contemporary high-end amenities with original early twentieth-century architecture. Preservation teams carefully conserved the building’s iconic southwestern façade, decorative terra-cotta floral reliefs, etched glass details, and distinctive copper roofing. Over 16,000 original exterior tiles were salvaged and reinstalled using ikedori, a traditional Japanese conservation technique that protects historic materials. The venue originally opened ninety years ago near the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, operating for generations as a theater, cinema, dance hall, and community gathering space.
