Celebrating One Hundred Fifty Years Of Sacher

  • The 150th anniversary of Hotel Sacher Vienna
  • Unveiling of Step Big and Dancer sculptures
  • The history of the Original Sacher-Torte
  • Family ownership and five-star superior hotel status

The Hotel Sacher Vienna celebrates a monumental milestone in 2026 as it marks 150 years of elegance, history, and world-class hospitality. This legendary institution officially opened its doors in 1876 and has since become a global ambassador for Viennese culture. To launch the anniversary festivities, the hotel unveiled a captivating art installation featuring the work of renowned Austrian artist Erwin Wurm. The ceremony took place on March 26, 2026, with the hotel owner families, the artist, and Vienna’s Mayor, Dr. Michael Ludwig, in attendance.

The anniversary installation features two striking sculptures titled Step Big and Dancer. These oversized handbags with long, slender legs are positioned prominently at the hotel entrance. According to Wurm, the pieces serve as a poetic reflection on the invisible baggage and personal histories that individuals carry with them. This collaboration highlights the deep-rooted connection between the Sacher brand and the world of fine arts.

Beyond its artistic contributions, the Hotel Sacher is famous for the Original Sacher-Torte, a culinary icon created by Franz Sacher in 1832. Each cake is still handcrafted today using thirty-four precise steps. The hotel remains one of the few privately owned, family-run five-star superior properties in the world and continues to earn prestigious accolades, including a spot on the list of the world’s fifty best hotels. As the anniversary year progresses, guests can look forward to more celebrations, including short films and special messages from international personalities. The Hotel Sacher Vienna continues to blend lived tradition with continuous renewal, ensuring its legacy remains vibrant for generations to come.
