The global maritime industry has reached an exciting sustainability milestone as small-scale energy supplier Avenir LNG successfully completed its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation for Royal Caribbean International in Honduras. The fueling operation took place during a scheduled port call by Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise vessel and the flagship of Royal Caribbean’s LNG-powered fleet. This achievement highlights the expanding reach, reliability, and versatility of alternative marine fuel infrastructure across the Caribbean basin.

The operation was carried out by the 7,500-cubic-meter bunker and supply vessel Avenir Advantage, which is owned by Avenir LNG and chartered by Petronas LNG. Coordinating the delivery required close collaboration among international energy trading firm Axpo Group, port stakeholders, local authorities, and the dedicated crews of both ships. By safely executing the transfer alongside normal port operations, the project team demonstrated how modern bunkering vessels can service cutting-edge dual-fuel cruise ships seamlessly while away from primary homeports.

Icon of the Seas, which operates with six dual-fuel engines running primarily on clean-burning LNG, relies on regional supply networks to maintain lower emissions across its Caribbean itineraries. This successful delivery follows Avenir’s previous milestone of bunkering Carnival Jubilee in Roatan, cementing Honduras as an emerging hub for alternative maritime energy.
