Azamara Cruises and Milam & Greene Whiskey are embarking on an innovative sensory journey called Bourbon Quest, a first-of-its-kind aging experiment at sea. Beginning March 26, 2026, a single barrel of Kentucky bourbon will board the Azamara Quest to mature during a 188-night World Cruise spanning 37 countries. This unique collaboration explores how the dynamic maritime environment—characterized by constant vessel motion, high humidity, and fluctuating sea temperatures—influences the final flavor profile of the spirit compared to barrels aged simultaneously on land in Texas, Kentucky, and Florida.
The experiment is led by Master Distiller Marlene Holmes and aims to demonstrate the profound impact of climate on whiskey maturation. Experts anticipate that the sea-aged expression, aptly named The Seafarer, will develop a darker color and more intense notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice due to the liquid being agitated against the oak staves. Guests aboard the Azamara Quest will have a front-row seat to this transformation, with the barrel displayed prominently on ship throughout the global voyage. This initiative perfectly aligns with Azamara’s philosophy of destination immersion, turning a traditional craft process into a captivating story for world travelers.
Upon the conclusion of the 2027 World Cruise, the results of this four-continent trek will be unveiled in a celebratory bottling. Approximately 400 limited-edition bottles will be available exclusively to Azamara guests, making this one of the most collectible whiskies in the world.
