Global interest in winter sun travel is significantly increasing, with searches for “Post-christmas holiday” surging by 30° and “destinations for winter sun” climbing by 54% in the past year, reflecting a growing desire for quick, warm escapes after the Christmas period. To identify potential destinations, the global booking platform Omio analyzed temperature data across European capitals to find those offering the highest average high temperatures in January 2026.

The analysis determined that Mediterranean capitals dominate the top rankings for warm January weather. Valletta, Malta, and Nicosia, Cyprus, share the top spot, both featuring average January high temperatures of 16 °. Valletta is highlighted for its culture, sea views, and feeling more like early spring, while Nicosia is noted for its potential for warm afternoons, outdoor dining, and historical sites.

Following closely is Lisbon, Portugal, with average high temperatures of 15° C Lisbon is recognized for its year-round vibrant atmosphere, stunning architecture, and exceptional food scene, with easy onward travel options available. Athens, Greece, maintains a mild mid-winter climate, providing an opportunity to explore ancient history, like the Acropolis, with fewer crowds and offering easy ferry access to nearby islands. Rome, Italy, rounds out the top five,offering a relaxed climate for visiting landmarks without the peak-season queues.
