Today (May 7, 2025) the federal government will begin enforcing Real ID requirements nationwide for state-issued identification like driver’s licenses to board domestic flights. The TSA will no longer accept non-compliant IDs. Enhanced IDs issued by Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington are acceptable.

While the TSA states 81% of travelers have acceptable IDs, a recent analysis indicates many states have lower compliance rates, potentially causing airport disruptions. Travelers without a Real ID may undergo an identity verification process by providing personal information and potentially face additional screening. If identity cannot be confirmed, the passenger will not be allowed through security. Individuals needing verification should arrive at least three hours before their domestic flight. Airports will aim to move these passengers to a separate area to avoid line backups.

Real ID compliant cards are marked with a star in the upper-right corner. Children under 18 are not required to have an ID for domestic travel, but it’s advisable to check individual airline policies.
