In a landmark initiative for global maritime safety, the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF), in partnership with the prestigious Lloyd’s Register Foundation, has launched the first-ever Global Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) Systems Review. This forward-thinking project represents a major step forward in strengthening the capabilities and effectiveness of SAR organizations around the world, ensuring a safer future for everyone at sea.

The strategic review is a comprehensive effort to assess the current state of SAR systems on local, national, and international levels. By bringing together a wide range of stakeholders—from national SAR organizations and government bodies to commercial shipping operators, fishing communities, and technology innovators—the review will foster unprecedented collaboration. Its goal is to identify existing strengths, pinpoint critical gaps, and thoughtfully consider emerging risks like climate change and geopolitical instability. This collaborative approach will yield invaluable, evidence-based recommendations to help shape and improve maritime SAR for decades to come.

Caroline Jupe, CEO of the IMRF, and Jan Przydatek, Director of Technologies at Lloyd’s Register Foundation, both highlighted the initiative’s importance. They emphasized that this collaboration is critical to empowering SAR communities and decision-makers to act decisively and keep more people safe. The review is a testament to a shared, unwavering commitment to protecting human life at sea through continuous improvement and global partnership. The insights gained will lay the groundwork for a more resilient and effective global SAR system, ready to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex maritime environment.
