- Strasbourg generates the highest online interest among top contenders with 1.6 million searches.
- Experts recommend visiting smaller towns to avoid stress and overcrowding during the holiday season.
A November 2025 study by Deluxe Holiday Homes has identified the most overcrowded Christmas travel destinations globally, ranking cities based on tourist density, safety, and event frequency. Paris leads the list as the most crowded location, hosting over 8.3 million visitors in December. With a relatively compact area of 105 square kilometers, the French capital experiences an overwhelming density of nearly 79,000 tourists per square kilometer. This congestion is exacerbated by popular attractions like the Champs-Élysées market and 47 different holiday events.

Brussels follows in second place, where 1.77 million tourists pack into a small area of just 32.6 square kilometers, creating intense crowding and accommodation shortages. Strasbourg ranks third, notable for having the highest online interest among the top contenders, with 1.6 million searches translating into 3.4 million actual visitors. Zurich and Dublin round out the top five. Zurich is distinguished by its high safety index and numerous holiday events, while Dublin sees significant online interest and hosts 13 specific Christmas celebrations that draw roughly 2.3 million visitors.
The Deluxe Holiday Homes report also highlights that larger cities like New York City and London, while attracting higher total visitor numbers (12.5 million and 14 million respectively), rank lower on density due to their vast geographic size. Industry experts suggest that while these major hubs offer extensive festivities, the intense crowding can be stressful. They recommend travelers consider smaller or lesser-known towns for a more relaxed and authentic holiday experience without the overwhelming congestion found in these top-tier tourist magnets.
