Major Airlines Manage Travel Amid Winter Storms

  • Total of 181 cancellations and 4,547 delays across major U.S. carriers
  • Severe snow and ice impacting hubs in Boston, New York, and Chicago
  • Extensive deicing procedures causing ground operational bottlenecks and slower turnarounds
  • Advice for passengers to utilize mobile alerts and explore rebooking options

Severe winter weather and operational bottlenecks have triggered widespread flight disruptions across the United States, leaving thousands of passengers stranded on January 20, 2026. Major carriers including SkyWest, Delta, American, JetBlue, and Spirit have reported a combined total of 181 cancellations and 4,547 delays. These issues are primarily concentrated in the Northeast and Midwest, where snow and ice have forced airlines to implement intensive deicing procedures, slowing down ground operations at several high-volume hubs.

Among the hardest-hit locations, Boston Logan International experienced 230 delays and 8 cancellations, with an average delay time of nearly an hour. In New York, LaGuardia Airport reported 120 delays as crews worked to manage ice accumulation on outbound aircraft. Philadelphia International and Pittsburgh International also faced significant challenges, with deicing operations starting late on January 19 and continuing into the following day. These delays have created a ripple effect across the domestic aviation network, impacting travel as far south as Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte.

Regional carriers have been particularly affected by these conditions. SkyWest, which operates flights for several major brands, reported 38 cancellations and nearly 500 delays, specifically impacting routes through Chicago O’Hare and Salt Lake City. Delta and its affiliate Endeavor Air also struggled with morning volume, totaling over 700 combined delays. Airlines are strongly encouraging travelers to sign up for real-time mobile alerts and check flight statuses before leaving for the airport. For those facing extended wait times, some carriers are offering flexible rebooking options or alternative routing to help mitigate the impact of the storm.
