A delightful trend in family travel, dubbed “Grandcations” or skip-generation travel, is rapidly taking hold across the Asia Pacific region. This growing phenomenon sees grandparents and grandchildren traveling together without the parents, according to Hilton’s 2026 Trends Report. An impressive six in ten travelers in the region have either embarked on or are planning such a skip-gen holiday, with the trend showing particular strength in China and India where it has transitioned from a novelty to a mainstream style of vacation.

The primary motivation behind this shift is the enriching opportunity to create special, lasting memories and strengthen intergenerational bonds, a reason cited by over half (58%) of respondents. In countries like India, Australia, and New Zealand, memory-making is the top priority, while travelers in Japan also value experiencing new things together. Furthermore, these holidays are recognized for contributing positively to the well-being of grandparents, with nearly nine in ten respondents noting an improvement in the health and wellness of older generations through quality time with their grandchildren.

The new focus on quality time over personal downtime is leading families to prioritize shared experiences like culinary exploration and visits to historical and cultural landmarks. The growing need for seamless multi-generational stays is also driving demand for accommodation features such as interconnecting rooms and senior-friendly facilities, including accessible dining and wellness amenities. This evolution in family travel underscores a commitment to togetherness and meaningful connection, ensuring every generation can comfortably enjoy the journey and build cherished memories.
