Find The Best Warm Winter Sun Destinations

  • Global Ranking Leaders: Southeast Asian destinations like Cambodia and Thailand offer the best balance of warmth and affordability for winter travel.
  • Florida Tourism Performance: The Florida Keys and Orlando are the top two sun spots in the United States, favored for their low winter rainfall.
  • Domestic Diversity: American travelers can find varied winter climates across nine top-rated states, including California, Arizona, and Hawaii.
  • Cost and Temperature Factors: High accommodation prices and temperature deviations from 25°C are the primary reasons U.S. destinations rank lower than international alternatives.

A recent study by Asian Geographical Expeditions analyzed 145 global destinations to identify the premier locations for winter sun. The research evaluated locations based on six critical metrics, including average temperatures, hotel ratings, daylight hours, precipitation, and accommodation affordability. While the United States features nine locations within the global top 100, international destinations in Southeast Asia and Africa dominate the highest rankings due to their proximity to ideal temperatures and lower costs.

Siem Reap, Cambodia, emerged as the top-ranked winter destination globally. It achieved this position by maintaining an average temperature nearly identical to the 25°C ideal, coupled with minimal rainfall and highly competitive weekly hotel rates. Other high-performing international spots include Chiang Mai, Thailand, which boasted the highest percentage of winter-specific five-star reviews, and Basse-Terre Island in Guadeloupe, which offers nearly perfect seasonal weather.

Within the United States, the Florida Keys is the highest-rated destination, ranking 61st globally. The Keys benefit from mild temperatures and very low precipitation, though the overall score is impacted by higher accommodation costs. Orlando and Miami Beach also appear in the top 100, noted for their dry conditions, though they experience greater temperature deviations and varying price points. Hawaii remains a strong contender with the Island of Hawaii, Maui, and Oahu all ranking within the top ten for American domestic escapes.

The study highlights that while northern U.S. cities like Chicago and Boston offer high-quality hotel infrastructure, they are unsuitable for sun-seekers due to extreme cold and limited daylight. Conversely, the Florida Keys and Hawaii provide the most reliable domestic warmth. Harish Kohli, CEO of the firm, noted that the U.S. offers a broad spectrum of experiences, allowing travelers to choose destinations based on whether they prioritize hotel luxury, cost, or climatic consistency.
