Expedition Innovates Sustainable Ocean Travel

  • AI-powered navigation for sustainability
  • Real-time data collection in polar regions
  • Improved global climate and weather forecasting
  • Reduced emissions and enhanced maritime safety

Aurora Expeditions, a leader in small-ship adventure travel, announced a new sustainability partnership with Australian climate-technology company CounterCurrent. This collaboration involves integrating CounterCurrent’s AI-powered navigation system aboard Aurora’s new vessel, the Douglas Mawson, which is scheduled to launch in December 2025.

During the 2025–26 Antarctic season, the Douglas Mawson will be equipped with a CounterCurrent sensor. This sensor will collect real-time data on wind, waves, and ocean currents from some of the world’s most remote waters. This collected data will then be incorporated into global climate and weather models. The goal is to enhance forecasting accuracy worldwide, leading to safer, more efficient, and lower-emission navigation practices across the maritime industry.

Sasha Buch, Sustainability Manager at Aurora Expeditions, highlighted the scarcity of real-time ocean data in polar regions, which is crucial for planning safe and efficient shipping routes. Through this partnership and collaboration with the Polar Citizen Science Collective, Aurora Expeditions aims to address these data gaps in the Southern Ocean. This initiative is expected to contribute to a more sustainable future for maritime travel, where each voyage provides valuable insights for subsequent journeys.

CounterCurrent’s system utilizes artificial intelligence, onboard sensors, and satellite data to create hyper-local, vessel-specific route predictions. By continuously analyzing ocean conditions and ship performance, the system models fuel-efficient routes, allowing ships to leverage ocean currents rather than contend with them. This approach is intended to reduce emissions and operational costs while improving safety and efficiency, particularly in challenging polar environments. This partnership adds to Aurora Expeditions’ existing environmental collaborations, which include Seawilding, Veritree, and Clean Hub, reinforcing their commitment to responsible travel and conservation efforts.
