The Port of Mombasa officially commenced its 2026 cruise tourism season on January 5 with the arrival of the Crystal Symphony. Operated by Crystal Cruises, the 238-meter luxury vessel docked at the island carrying more than 1,000 passengers. This visit marks the ship’s second call to Mombasa, following its inaugural visit the previous year. The ship arrived from Port Elizabeth, South Africa, as part of a comprehensive 26-night voyage connecting Cape Town to Mumbai.

The current itinerary, which began on December 23, 2025, traces the eastern coastline of Africa before crossing the Indian Ocean. Prior to reaching Kenya, the vessel made stops in South Africa, Mozambique, and Tanzania. After its departure from Mombasa, the Crystal Symphony is scheduled to visit the Seychelles, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka, eventually concluding its journey in India on January 18. During the stopover, passengers utilized the day to participate in organized shore excursions, including visits to local wildlife parks and tours of Mombasa’s historic districts.

The arrival was formally received by representatives from the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and the Mombasa county government. Turasha Kinyanjui, speaking on behalf of the KPA, reaffirmed the port’s commitment to enhancing cruise tourism through upgraded facilities and continued cooperation with industry partners.

Officials view this visit as a positive indicator for the region, noting that it is the first of several cruise calls scheduled for the coming weeks. This consistent maritime traffic suggests a growing interest in Mombasa as a key destination within the regional cruise market, providing a tangible boost to the local tourism economy.
