A PhotoAiD survey of 884 Americans regarding their experiences at sea revealed strong overall satisfaction with cruising, despite common annoyances. The majority of respondents (81%) rated their most recent cruise as either excellent or good, and over 84% expressed intentions to cruise again within the next 12 months. The most common emotions reported after a cruise were relaxed (34%), pleased (17%), and content (11%), reinforcing the vacation’s goal of fun and relaxation.

However, the survey clearly identified three primary sources of frustration among passengers. The top grievance was rude or inconsiderate behavior from fellow travelers, cited by 74% of respondents, encompassing issues like drunkenness, loud arguing, and inappropriate attire. High onboard costs were the second major annoyance, with 71% complaining about expensive drink packages, followed closely by expensive essentials and hidden fees (both 69%). The third major frustration was smoking or vaping in prohibited areas, cited by 70% of respondents.

Other significant pain points included overcrowding issues, such as chair hogging (67%), long waits for tender boats (69%), and difficulty securing reservations at specialty dining venues (68%). Mid-length cruises, lasting 4 to 14 days, were the most popular duration (66% of trips), and the most frequent cruise companions were friends (29%), followed by partners or spouses (22%).
