A 59-year-old plane passenger, Karen Baker, has been jailed for three months following a disruptive and violent incident aboard a Virgin Atlantic flight traveling from Miami to London Heathrow. During the nine-hour flight on February 9, Baker, who reportedly consumed 15 cans of wine, attacked her boyfriend, Steven White, by attempting to headbutt him, elbowing, and punching him.

When fellow passengers intervened or asked her to be quiet, the hairdresser shouted abuse and slurs, including the phrase: “I will be going back to my big house and you will be going back to your council houses.” Cabin staff were forced to move Baker to the back of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, but she continued her aggressive and abusive behavior toward other travelers.
Baker was arrested upon landing at Heathrow Airport. She pleaded guilty to being drunk on an aircraft, racially aggravated harassment, and using threatening or abusive words to cause harassment, alarm, or distress. She was also convicted of assault by beating against her partner. Sentencing, Judge Sunaina Kaur Srai-Chohan emphasized that Baker’s actions constituted a “prolonged, abusive and violent display of behaviour within the confines of an aeroplane,” which endangered passengers and crew.
