Abu Dhabi Building Advanced Air Mobility Network

  • Abu Dhabi Airports received a mandate to develop a strategic network of over 10 public vertiports for eVTOL aircraft.
  • The first phase will focus on Zayed International and Al Bateen Executive Airports, with initial eVTOL flights expected to begin in 2026.
  • The initiative is a partnership with Skyports Infrastructure to ensure world-class standards for infrastructure and operational management.
  • The adoption of eVTOL aircraft supports the UAE’s sustainability goals, offering a quieter, cleaner alternative to traditional air travel.

First, what does VTOL mean?
An electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft is a variety of VTOL aircraft that uses electric power to hover, take off, and land vertically. This technology came about owing to major advances in electric propulsion and the emerging need for new aerial vehicles for Advanced Air Mobility and Urban Air Mobility that can enable greener and quieter flights. Electric and hybrid propulsion systems have also the potential of lowering the operating costs of aircraft.

Moving along, Abu Dhabi Airports has been granted a mandate to develop a strategic network of vertiports, specialized infrastructure hubs for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, positioning the UAE at the forefront of advanced air mobility (AAM). This initiative, which includes the development and operation of more than 10 public vertiports, is set to revolutionize urban and inter-emirate travel.

The phased rollout will begin with Zayed International Airport and Al Bateen Executive Airport serving as the starting points for the eVTOL routes, with the first flights expected to commence in 2026. These initial routes will focus on short, point-to-point connections, significantly enhancing airport-city connectivity and offering an efficient, cleaner alternative to traditional ground transport.

Abu Dhabi Airports has partnered with Skyports Infrastructure, a leader in the AAM industry, to oversee the design, construction, engineering, and eventual operation of the network. The integration of these battery-powered eVTOL aircraft—which are approximately 100 times quieter than traditional helicopters—aligns with the UAE’s commitment to promoting sustainable transport and reducing its carbon footprint. The ultimate goal is to expand the network to include inter-emirate travel, potentially connecting Abu Dhabi with Dubai and Al Ain, as battery technology matures.
