Construction is currently underway on Peru’s Chinchero International Airport, a major infrastructure project designed to serve as a primary gateway to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Although the government initially broke ground in 2018 with hopes of a 2026 completion, recent updates have confirmed that the opening is now slated for late 2027. The project is estimated to cost approximately US$665 million and is being developed with technical assistance from South Korea to replace the aging and geographically constrained Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport in Cusco.

The new facility is located approximately 30 kilometers from the ancient Inca citadel and is expected to handle between six and eight million passengers annually once fully operational. By allowing for direct international and domestic flights to the Sacred Valley, the airport aims to eliminate the current logistical necessity of connecting through Lima or traveling long distances from central Cusco. Proponents of the airport argue that it will stimulate the local economy by creating thousands of jobs and providing a modern transportation hub that can accommodate the growing global demand for tourism in the Andes.
However, the project remains a subject of intense debate among conservationists, archaeologists, and local residents. Critics express concern that a massive increase in visitor numbers—some estimates suggesting a 200% surge—could jeopardize the structural integrity and UNESCO World Heritage status of Machu Picchu. Additionally, environmentalists warn that the construction and increased air traffic may deplete local water resources, such as Lake Piuray, and disturb sensitive archaeological sites that have yet to be fully explored. Despite these challenges and legal disputes over land acquisition, the Peruvian government is moving forward with the project to modernize the region’s tourism infrastructure.
