Holland America Sanitizes Ship For Future Voyages

  • A norovirus outbreak affected 81 passengers and eight crew members aboard the Rotterdam
  • Holland America stated the cases were mostly mild and resolved quickly
  • The ship underwent comprehensive sanitization protocols upon returning to Fort Lauderdale
  • This is the second reported gastrointestinal illness outbreak on this vessel in eleven months

A recent voyage aboard the Holland America Line cruise ship Rotterdam was impacted by a health incident involving gastrointestinal illness. The vessel, which departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on December 28, returned to port on Friday following reports of a norovirus outbreak among those on board. According to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the illness affected a total of 89 individuals, comprising 81 of the ship’s 2,593 passengers and eight members of the 1,005-person crew.

The primary symptoms associated with the outbreak were identified as vomiting and diarrhea. In compliance with maritime health regulations, the ship’s crew took immediate action to mitigate the spread of the virus. These measures included the isolation of ill passengers and crew members, as well as the collection of stool specimens for testing purposes. Holland America Line issued a statement regarding the situation, characterizing the cases as predominantly mild in nature and noting that the affected individuals recovered quickly. The company reiterated that the health and safety of its guests and workforce are its highest priority.

Upon the ship’s arrival back at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, a comprehensive sanitization of the vessel was conducted in alignment with CDC protocols. This deep cleaning aims to ensure the ship is safe for future passengers. The incident represents the second time within an eleven-month span that the Rotterdam has experienced a norovirus outbreak; a previous occurrence was recorded shortly after a departure in February, which affected a larger group of 169 people. The cruise line continues to monitor the situation and apply rigorous cleaning standards to prevent future occurrences.
